HSTS

Whether browsers are told to only ever connect over HTTPS

What it is

HSTS is a response header telling browsers to only ever contact this domain over HTTPS, for a stated length of time. Sites that meet the requirements can also submit themselves to the preload list, which ships inside browsers so even a first-ever request is covered.

Why it matters

Without it, the first request a user makes is usually plain HTTP, and that request can be intercepted before any redirect gets a chance to run. HSTS also stops a user clicking through a certificate warning, which is the step most on-path attacks rely on.

How this assessment works

Skopeon Labs queries public infrastructure signals and authoritative network protocols directly from external sensor nodes. All evaluations are completely non-invasive and agentless, assessing observable configurations without sending malicious payloads or disrupting service.

Operational Scope & Limitations

This check evaluates public perimeter responses observable at the time of inquiry. Endpoints protected behind third-party reverse proxies or CDNs reflect the edge configuration of the proxy layer.

Key terms

HSTS
Tells browsers to only ever connect over HTTPS, so visitors can't be downgraded to plain HTTP.
HSTS max-age
How long browsers remember to only use HTTPS. The HSTS preload list needs at least a year.
includeSubDomains
Applies HSTS to every subdomain too, so none of them can be reached over plain HTTP.
HSTS Preload
Asks browsers to build the site into their HTTPS-only list, protecting even the very first visit.
